Why do so many oppose Christianity?

I am really enjoying reading the New Testament chronologically.  It is so interesting to read the accounts of the events from each gospel simultaneously since each gives details of what happened from a different perspective.
As I was completing the Daily Bible Reading on Tuesday, I came across these verses in Luke 2:34-35:

34 Then Simeon blessed them and said to Mary, his mother: “This child is destined to cause the falling and rising of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be spoken against, 35 so that the thoughts of many hearts will be revealed.

I have often wondered why Jesus is so hated and His words rejected by some, when His words give life, hope, and peace to many of us.  I've always thought that if people don't want to follow Jesus, why don't they just ignore Christianity?  Why do those bound in sin spew such hatred towards Christians?  These verses give us the answer.  It was ordained from Jesus' birth.
The Bible tells us here that people are opposed to Christianity because of Jesus and the standard of righteousness He presents.  As long as His example is set before them through the lives of those who follow Him, those who are choosing to live sinful lives will be continually convicted of their sinful lifestyles.  Therefore they are intent on destroying the "Sign" instead of the sin.
This is another example of how God has already answered my questions in His word.  I just need to keep reading it so that I can discover them!
